Eyewear Trends 2027: 8 Glasses Styles to Watch Next Year

The glasses heading into 2027 are bigger and softer at the same time: oversized acetate, rounded cat-eyes and ovals lead, while thin Y2K-style metal and barely-there rimless frames offer the opposite of chunky. Pilot shapes have returned in both slim metal and thick acetate, and color is moving toward what Eyecare Business called "new darks," like burgundy and plum, creamy neutrals and crystal-clear acetate.

This list comes from 2026 trade-show and runway coverage (MIDO, SILMO Paris, US market weeks and SS27 forecasts). For each trend we add what matters once lenses go in: who it suits, how it handles a prescription, and frames to try.

The eight directions that kept showing up in 2026 coverage:

  1. Oversized frames: thick, structured acetate replaces tiny frames.
  2. Softer cat-eyes: rounder, gentler wings and butterfly shapes.
  3. Ovals and soft rounds: 90s ovals and thin round metal.
  4. Thin metal and Y2K rimless: barely-there frames and high-shine silver.
  5. Pilot shapes: aviators in slim metal and chunky acetate.
  6. Statement brows and two-tone builds: metal brows on acetate, mixed materials.
  7. Crystal and tinted transparents: clear, smoky and frosted acetate.
  8. New darks and creamy neutrals: burgundy and plum instead of black; milk white and sand.

They overlap: a burgundy oversized cat-eye checks three boxes at once. Many frames below are in our new releases.

1. Big, Bold Oversized Frames

The micro-frame moment is over. Glamour South Africa's winter 2026 eyewear edit called for retiring ultra-slim frames in favor of large, structured eyewear, pointing to oversized shapes at Saint Laurent and heavy acetate at Balenciaga. In optical frames, that means wide lenses, deep lens heights and thick acetate fronts.

  • Who it suits: medium to wide faces. On a narrow face, go "bold" (thick rims) rather than "huge" (wide lenses).
  • With a prescription: big lenses extend far from your pupils, so strong minus prescriptions get thick, heavy outer edges. If lens width plus bridge is much larger than your PD, the edges get thicker still. Thick acetate hides a lot of it. Past about ±5.00, consider 1.67 or 1.74 lenses, or read our high-prescription frame guide before going big.
  • Frames to try: Sienna (59-15-145, 48 mm lens height, 147 mm total width) is an oversized square cat-eye in acetate, best on wide faces. William (56-19-148, 46 mm lens height, 150 mm total width) is the men's equivalent: an 80s square in chunky acetate. More in our oversized collection.

2. Softer, Sculpted Cat-Eyes

The cat-eye is staying, but its wings are getting softer. FashionUnited's SS27 forecast describes it as rounder and gentler than the 1950s version, and Eyecare Business reported "sculptural cat-eyes" and oversized butterfly shapes at a major eyewear group's August 2026 market week. Expect rounded acetate wings rather than sharp points.

  • Who it suits: round, oval and square faces, since the lifted outer corners add a cheekbone line. Heart-shaped faces do best with a subtle wing that doesn't widen the top further. Our face-shape guide covers this in more detail.
  • With a prescription: the upswept outer corner is the point farthest from the optical center, so it's where a strong minus lens is thickest. A full acetate rim covers that edge well. If you wear progressives, many labs look for at least about 30 mm of lens height, and deeper is more comfortable for the reading zone.
  • Frames to try: Elodie (53-18-143, 42 mm lens height, 139 mm total width) pairs an acetate front with a metal bridge and temples, in on-trend Tortoise/Wine and Olive Green/Tortoise. Browse all cat-eye frames.

3. Ovals and Soft Rounds

The oval is the quiet favorite of 2026. FashionUnited's SS27 forecast called it "one of the key silhouettes of the season" and noted that thin, round metal frames have made a comeback as part of a broader move to minimalist metal. Who What Wear has tied the oval to 90s minimalism, and the look works in both wire and acetate.

  • Who it suits: square and angular faces, and oblong faces when the oval has some depth.
  • With a prescription: this is the most prescription-friendly trend on the list. Round and oval lenses keep the edge at a fairly even distance from the optical center, so strong minus lenses avoid thick corners. A small round titanium frame is one of the lightest options for heavy lenses.
  • Frames to try: Alice (52-24-145, 39 mm lens height, 148 mm total width) is a retro acetate oval that comes in white and cream pink, for wider faces. Madison (43-23-143, 43 mm lens height, 135 mm total width) is a pure titanium round with an integrated bridge.

4. Thin Metal and Y2K Rimless

Alongside the oversized trend runs its opposite. FashionUnited's spring/summer 2026 coverage credited the Y2K influence with "restoring the cool factor" to thin metal frames, pointing to looks from Christopher Esber, Issey Miyake and Stella McCartney. Rimless frames take the same barely-there idea one step further. At SILMO Paris 2026, OptikNow reported, one of the Trends Forum's four directions, "Aura," was billed as a modern revival of 90s glam.

  • Who it suits: almost every face, because the frame nearly disappears. Great for all-day wear and business settings.
  • With a prescription: rimless lenses are drilled and mounted with small screws or pins, so the whole edge is on show. They work best for low to moderate prescriptions. Above about ±2.00, a 1.61 or higher index keeps the visible edge slimmer, and an anti-reflective coating cuts the reflections that make an exposed lens more noticeable.
  • Frames to try: Bianca (53-16-135, 38 mm lens height, 135 mm total width) is a rimless soft-oval aviator with adjustable nose pads, in lavender and dark purple as well as gold. For sun, Theodore (59-16-138, 45 mm lens height, 145 mm total width) is a Y2K rimless rectangle; it is a non-prescription polarized sunglass sold as is. More in rimless frames and sunglasses.

5. The Pilot Comeback

Aviators are back in a big way. At a major eyewear group's August 2026 market week, pilot frames appeared in both sun and optical, "in slim metal and bolder acetate interpretations" (Eyecare Business). VisionPlus Magazine's MIDO 2026 coverage listed the aviator and navigator among the reinterpreted classics, and FashionUnited's SS27 forecast shows aviators and flatter-bottomed D-shapes in warm, translucent colors.

  • Who it suits: oval, square and heart-shaped faces; the wide top and tapering lens balance a strong jaw or narrow chin.
  • With a prescription: the teardrop lens is deep, which is great for progressives but means more lens material. With a strong minus prescription, the lower outer corner gets thick. Acetate pilots hide that edge better than wire versions.
  • Frames to try: Owen (55-21-145, 46 mm lens height, 151 mm total width) is the bold acetate version of the trend, in caramel and blue tortoise. Bianca (above) covers the slim, rimless side. See all pilot frames.

6. Statement Brows and Two-Tone Builds

20/20 Magazine's 2026 frame report gave a whole trend to "statement-making brows that immediately draw the eyes to the top." Men's coverage has pointed to the return of brow bars and browlines, and a men's collection Eyecare Business covered in September 2026 combined dual-tone metals with acetates in herringbone- and plaid-inspired patterns.

  • Who it suits: round and oblong faces, where a strong top line adds structure, and men who want more than a plain rectangle.
  • With a prescription: a full-rim acetate front with a metal brow handles any prescription well. Classic browline and half-rim styles leave the bottom edge exposed, which shows on strong minus lenses.
  • Frames to try: Vincent (56-16-145, 43 mm lens height, 143 mm total width) has an acetate front with gold-tone metal across the brow and temples. Elodie (trend 2) is the two-tone option for women.

7. Crystal and Tinted Transparents

Clear frames have become a staple, now in thicker acetate with frosted or lightly tinted finishes. Eyecare Business described that same men's collection using crystal in "clear, gray, olive, and smoky" treatments, and VisionPlus Magazine's MIDO 2026 coverage highlighted "luminous transparencies."

  • Who it suits: anyone who wants a frame that looks lighter than solid black, including first-time wearers.
  • With a prescription: clear acetate lets you see the lens edge through the rim, so thick minus edges can show as rings. Smoky, olive or gray transparents hide more than pure clear. With a strong prescription, pair clear frames with a higher index and anti-reflective coating.
  • Frames to try: Aria (49-21-140, 42 mm lens height, 130 mm total width) has a crystal acetate front with metal details and colored temple tips, sized for smaller faces. William (trend 1) also comes in Transparent Grey.

8. New Darks and Creamy Neutrals

Black isn't the only dark option anymore. Eyecare Business reported that the same August market week presented plum, burgundy, smoke and violet as alternatives to black, calling them "shades that function like neutrals while delivering more personality." On the light side, Eyecare Business also named milk white, sand, beige and taupe as key colors for 2026. FashionUnited's SS27 forecast adds greens and warm earth tones, and tortoiseshell is everywhere.

  • Who it suits: burgundy and plum read softer than black; creamy neutrals suit people who want the frame to blend in.
  • With a prescription: darker and patterned frames hide thick lens edges better than light or clear ones, so a burgundy or dark tortoise acetate is the easiest way to wear color with a strong prescription.
  • Frames to try: Elodie in Tortoise/Wine, Sienna in Beige/Clear or White/Lavender, Alice in White or Cream Pink, and Bianca in Dark Purple.

Timeless Styles That Never Go Out of Style

If you want one pair that still looks right in five years, skip the extremes and buy the classic each trend grew out of. The 2026 reports we read kept reworking the same icons.

  • Tortoiseshell acetate in a soft rectangle or square. The most versatile frame, and the pattern hides lens edges. Start with our rectangle frames.
  • A thin round or panto metal frame. It has never really looked dated. Madison is a good example.
  • A classic pilot. Medium size, in gold, silver or tortoise acetate, like Owen.
  • A black or dark acetate frame with a strong brow. Burgundy and dark tortoise now do the same job.

For a long-term frame, fit matters more than shape: total width close to your face width, a comfortable bridge and a lens size suited to your prescription. Check the index ranges in our lens index comparison before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are round glasses still in style?

Yes. Rounded frames featured in 2026 optical collections, and SS27 forecasts describe thin round metal as making a comeback. Rounds are also among the easiest shapes for a strong prescription.

Are oversized glasses out?

No, they are getting bigger. Fall/winter 2026 coverage called for retiring micro-frames in favor of large, structured frames. Small ovals still appear, but the energy heading into 2027 is with bold acetate.

What glasses are timeless?

Tortoiseshell acetate in a soft rectangle or square, thin round metal frames, classic pilots and plain black acetate. In a medium size that matches your face width, they last for years.

What color frames are trending for 2027?

Dark colors that work like black, especially burgundy, plum, smoke and violet, plus creamy neutrals such as milk white, sand and beige. Crystal and smoky transparents, olive greens and tortoiseshell are also strong.

Are rimless glasses back in style?

They fit the moment. Thin, Y2K-influenced metal frames returned in 2026, and rimless frames share the same barely-there look. They are light and comfortable but suit low to moderate prescriptions best, since the whole lens edge is visible.

Can I wear trendy frames with a strong prescription?

Most of them. Ovals, rounds, soft cat-eyes and full-rim acetate work well. Very large, clear or rimless frames need a moderate lens size, a higher index and anti-reflective coating. If your vision has changed recently, get an up-to-date eye exam before ordering.

Quick Checklist Before You Order a Trend Frame

  • Compare total frame width with a pair that fits you well.
  • Add lens width and bridge, and check it isn't far above your PD if your prescription is strong.
  • For progressives, choose a frame with plenty of lens height.
  • For rimless, clear or very large frames, choose a higher index and anti-reflective coating.
  • Prefer dark or patterned acetate if you want to hide thick lens edges.
